Toilet seat covers and bidet seats: buying guide
A replacement toilet seat cover must match your bowl's shape, length and the spacing of its two fixing holes, so measure before buying. Bidet seats add a washing nozzle: non-electric models need only the water supply, while electric ones also need a power point near the toilet.

What to look for
Measure before you buy
Measure the distance between the two fixing holes at the back of the bowl, the length from those holes to the front rim, and the widest point. Note whether the bowl is round, elongated or a squarer D shape. Seats for one-piece bowls are often model-specific, so find the brand and model number on the bowl or cistern.
Soft-close and quick-release
Soft-close hinges lower the seat and lid slowly instead of letting them slam, which also protects the bowl from chips. Quick-release hinges let the seat lift off for cleaning. Check the hinges suit your bowl's hole spacing and can be adjusted.
Non-electric bidet seats
A non-electric bidet seat replaces the seat cover and has one or two nozzles fed from the cold water supply to the cistern through a tee valve. It needs no power point, but the water is unheated.
Electric bidet seats
Electric bidet seats add warm water, a heated seat, adjustable pressure and sometimes a dryer. They need a power point near the toilet that suits a wet area. If there is none, a Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) has to add one, which typically costs $250–450.
Bidet seat or bidet spray
A handheld bidet spray on the wall costs less and works with any bowl, but you hold it yourself. A bidet seat is built in and easier for users with limited mobility. Both connect to the toilet's water supply.
Raised seats for seniors
A raised toilet seat sits on the bowl to shorten the distance to sit down and stand up. Check it fits your bowl shape and locks firmly in place, and pair it with a grab bar beside the toilet.

Checks for HDB, condo and landed homes
HDB
- Measure the hole spacing, length and shape of the bowl before buying.
- For an electric bidet seat, check there is a suitable power point near the toilet; budget for an LEW if not.
- Check the cistern's supply has an angle valve where a bidet seat's tee connection can go.
- Pair a raised seat with a grab bar for older users.
Condo
- Developer-fitted one-piece bowls may need a model-specific seat, so find the model number first.
- Wall-hung bowls with concealed cisterns may have no exposed supply valve for a bidet seat; check before buying.
- Check there is a power point within reach for an electric bidet seat.
Landed
- Measure each toilet separately; bowls in different bathrooms can be different models.
- Plan power points for electric bidet seats during renovation, when wiring is easier to run.
- For an older family member, choose a raised seat that locks or bolts firmly to the bowl.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know which seat cover fits my toilet?
Measure the gap between the two fixing holes, the length from the holes to the front rim, and the width, and note the bowl shape. If the bowl is a one-piece model, look for the brand and model number and ask for the matching seat.
Do I need a plumber to change a toilet seat cover?
Usually not. Most seats are held by two bolts or a quick-release bracket. A plumber or handyman helps if the bolts are rusted or the seat is model-specific and fiddly to fit.
Can a bidet seat fit any toilet bowl?
Most standard floor-standing bowls take one if the seat length and hole spacing match. Unusually shaped one-piece bowls, and wall-hung bowls with no exposed water valve, may not.
Does an electric bidet seat need an electrician?
If there is a suitable power point near the toilet, the seat plugs in. Adding a new power point is electrical work for a Licensed Electrical Worker.
Non-electric or electric bidet seat?
A non-electric seat is cheaper and needs no power point, but the water is unheated. An electric seat adds warm water and a heated seat, costs several times more and needs a power point near the toilet.
