Grab bars: buying guide

Grab bars give a firm handhold beside the toilet and in the shower, and they only work when screwed into solid wall with proper anchors. Choose stainless steel bars with a stated load rating, and in an HDB flat, first check whether you qualify for subsidised bars under EASE.

What to look for

Where bars help most

The usual spots are beside the toilet, where people sit down and stand up, and inside the shower, where the floor is wet. A bar by the bathroom entrance helps if there is a step or kerb. Watch how the user moves around the bathroom and fit bars where they naturally reach.

Straight, L-shaped or fold-up

Straight bars are the most common and can go horizontal, vertical or at an angle. L-shaped bars give a vertical grip for standing and a horizontal one for support in one piece. Fold-up bars hinge against the wall beside the toilet when not in use, which suits narrow toilets.

Material and grip

Stainless steel resists rust in a wet bathroom, while chrome-plated bars can rust once the plating is scratched. A textured or ridged grip is easier to hold with wet or soapy hands. Towel rails and soap dish handles are not grab bars and will not take a person's weight.

Load rating and fixing

Look for a load rating stated by the maker, and have the bar fixed through the tile into solid wall with anchors suited to the wall type. Suction-cup bars can let go without warning and should not take a person's full weight. Ask the installer to check for concealed pipes and cables before drilling.

HDB EASE subsidies

HDB's Enhancement for Active Seniors (EASE) programme subsidises grab bars and other fittings for eligible HDB households, with subsidised grab bar sets costing roughly $15–65. Check eligibility and how to apply with HDB before buying bars privately.

Types

Straight grab bar

Single bar, commonly about 30 to 90 cm long, fitted horizontally, vertically or at an angle.

L-shaped grab bar

One-piece bar with a vertical and a horizontal section, often used beside the toilet or in the shower.

Fold-up grab bar

Hinged bar that folds up against the wall when not in use. Common beside toilets in tight spaces.

Angled grab bar

Bar set at an angle, which some users find easier for pulling up from sitting.

Checks for HDB, condo and landed homes

HDB

  • Check whether you qualify for HDB's EASE subsidy before buying bars privately.
  • Ask the installer to check for concealed pipes before drilling near the toilet, basin and shower mixer.
  • In a narrow toilet, consider a fold-up bar beside the bowl so the space stays usable.
  • Choose a textured grip for the shower area.

Condo

  • Check MCST rules on drilling hours. The job is short but noisy.
  • Some condo bathroom walls are board partitions rather than masonry; bars on these need backing or special anchors.
  • Match the finish to your fittings if you like, but do not trade grip or load rating for looks.

Landed

  • Plan bars for every bathroom the user actually uses, including any on another floor.
  • Consider a bar at any step or kerb into the bathroom.
  • Check the wall type in extensions and older walls; they may need different anchors.

Installation and repair

Frequently asked questions

Can a grab bar be installed on tiles?

Yes, but the screws must go through the tile into the solid wall behind it, with anchors suited to the wall. The tile alone will not hold. Suction-cup bars are not safe to put your full weight on.

Where should grab bars go in a small HDB toilet?

Most households start with one beside the toilet and one in the shower area. A fold-up bar beside the toilet saves space. Fit them where the user reaches when sitting down, standing up and stepping in.

How do I get grab bars under HDB EASE?

Eligibility and applications are handled by HDB, so check with HDB directly. Under EASE, subsidised grab bar sets cost eligible households roughly $15–65.

Is a towel rail strong enough to hold on to?

No. Towel rails are not designed or fixed to take a person's weight and can pull out of the wall. Fit a proper grab bar where someone needs support.
