When to replace or repair
- A crack in the seat or lid, which can pinch skin.

Safe things to try first
- Measure the bowl from the centre of the bolt holes to the front edge, across the widest point, and the gap between the two bolt holes.
- Note whether the bowl is round or elongated, and whether the seat is fixed from underneath or from the top.
- Check the brand and model of a one-piece bowl, as some only take the maker's own seat.
- Try tightening the fixing nuts before replacing a wobbly seat.
Stop and call if
- The fixing bolts are rusted solid and will not turn.
- The bowl is cracked around the bolt holes.
- The seat uses a concealed fixing you cannot reach.

How do I know what size toilet seat to buy?
Measure from the centre of the bolt holes to the front edge of the bowl, the widest point across, and the gap between the bolt holes. Note whether the bowl is round or elongated, and bring the measurements or a photo when buying.
Can I change a toilet seat myself?
Usually yes. Most seats are held by two bolts, with nuts under the bowl or fixings from the top. If the bolts are rusted, use penetrating oil or call a plumber rather than forcing them and risking a cracked bowl.
What is a soft-close toilet seat?
It has dampers in the hinge so the seat and lid lower slowly instead of slamming. When a damper wears out, some seats take replacement hinges while others need a new seat.
Do I need a licensed plumber to change a toilet seat?
No. A seat cover is not water or sanitary pipe work. Only installing, changing or relocating the toilet bowl itself needs a PUB Licensed Plumber.
Should I get a bidet seat instead?
If you want a washing function, a bidet seat replaces the standard seat on most bowls. Electric bidet seats need a power point near the toilet, so check that first.
