Shower chairs and foldable seats: buying guide
A shower chair lets someone sit while bathing, either as a freestanding stool or chair or as a wall-mounted seat that folds up when not in use. Freestanding chairs need no installation, while a foldable wall seat must be fixed into solid wall and is subsidised for eligible HDB households under EASE.

What to look for
Freestanding or wall-mounted
Freestanding stools and chairs can be moved around and need no drilling. A wall-mounted foldable seat stays fixed in the shower, folds flat when others use the bathroom and does not slide on a wet floor. In small bathrooms the foldable seat usually takes up less space.
Backrest, arms and seat
A plain stool suits someone with good balance. A chair with a backrest and armrests gives more support for sitting down and standing up. Look for drainage holes in the seat and non-slip rubber feet on freestanding models.
Weight limit and fixing
Check the maker's maximum user weight and leave a margin. A wall-mounted seat is only as strong as its fixing, so it must go into solid wall with suitable anchors, not into tile alone or a board partition without backing.
Placing it in the shower
Put the seat where the user can reach the mixer and handset while sitting, and clear of the door swing. A grab bar beside the seat makes sitting down and standing up much safer. A slide rail or longer hose lets the handset reach a seated user.
EASE for HDB households
HDB's EASE programme includes a foldable shower seat for eligible households at a subsidised price. Check eligibility with HDB before buying and installing one privately.
Types
Shower stool
Backless seat on four legs. Compact and light, for users with good balance.

Chair with a backrest and often armrests, for users who need support sitting and standing.
Wall-mounted foldable shower seat
Seat fixed to the wall that folds up when not in use. Stable on wet floors and saves space.

Checks for HDB, condo and landed homes
HDB
- Check EASE eligibility before buying a foldable seat privately.
- In a compact bathroom, a foldable seat or small stool usually fits better than a full chair.
- Pair the seat with a grab bar within easy reach.
- Check the handset reaches a seated user; a slide rail or longer hose helps.
Condo
- Glass shower enclosures can be narrow; measure the inside width before choosing a chair.
- Check MCST work hours for drilling a wall-mounted seat.
- Some bathroom walls are board partitions; a wall seat needs solid backing.
Landed
- If the user's bathroom has a bathtub, consider a transfer bench.
- A shower commode chair helps if the user has to be moved from the bedroom to the bathroom.
- Fit a seat in every bathroom the user uses, not just the main one.
Installation and repair
Frequently asked questions
Is a wall-mounted shower seat safe in an HDB bathroom?
Yes, when it is fixed into solid wall with suitable anchors and the user stays within its weight limit. Ask the installer to check for concealed pipes before drilling.
Can I get a foldable shower seat under EASE?
A foldable shower seat is among the items HDB subsidises under EASE for eligible households. Check eligibility and the current subsidised price with HDB.
Should I get a stool or a chair with a backrest?
A stool is fine for someone with good balance who just wants to sit. If the user tires easily or needs to push up to stand, a chair with a backrest and armrests is safer.
Do shower chairs need to be installed?
Freestanding stools and chairs do not. Wall-mounted foldable seats do, because they must be fixed securely into solid wall.
What weight limit should I look for?
Choose a seat rated comfortably above the user's weight. Makers state the limit on the box or listing; if it is missing, choose another model.
