Plumbing questions, answered
Straight answers to the questions we get most about prices, rules and booking. For a specific problem, the service pages go into more detail.
Booking and prices
How do I get a quote?
WhatsApp a photo or short video of the problem, your home type (HDB, condo or landed), your postal code and when you are free. We reply with a likely cause and a price range.
Will the price change when the plumber arrives?
The price range is based on what you send. The plumber confirms the final price on site before starting. If something unexpected turns up once a pipe is opened, the work stops and the new price is agreed with you first.
Is there a charge if I do not go ahead?
A transport or inspection fee may apply if you decline after the visit. It is told to you before anyone sets off.
Do your prices include GST?
Your quote will state whether GST applies and whether it is included. Ask if it is not clear.
How do I pay?
Payment is due when the job is done. Accepted methods are listed on your quote.
Rules and responsibility
Which plumbing jobs need a PUB Licensed Plumber?
Installing or replacing a storage water heater, a toilet bowl, or water service pipes, and sanitary piping work. Changing taps, shower sets, basins, sinks, cistern parts and instant heaters does not. Our licensed plumber page explains the rules.
Who fixes the common pipe in an HDB block?
Your town council maintains the common stack and other common property. Pipes and fittings serving only your flat, including the floor trap and branch pipe, are generally the owner's responsibility.
My ceiling is leaking from the flat above. Who pays?
For HDB flats, start with the owner upstairs; your HDB Branch can help if that stalls. The floor slab between two flats is the joint responsibility of both owners, and HDB has a scheme that shares the cost of some repairs. Our ceiling leak page explains the process.
Do I need my condo management's approval?
Most condos require you to inform management before contractors come in, and some restrict work hours and noisy work. Check your by-laws or ask the managing agent.
Before the plumber arrives
Where is the main water valve?
In HDB flats it is at the water meter, usually in the meter compartment along the common corridor, and often there is a second valve inside near the kitchen. Condos usually have a valve inside the unit. Landed homes have one at the meter near the gate.
What should I do if a pipe bursts?
Shut the main valve, switch off power to sockets and appliances near the water if it is safe to do so, move valuables away and soak up what you can. Then call or WhatsApp us.
Should I clear the area before the plumber comes?
Yes, please clear the space around the problem, such as the cabinet under the sink, and make sure there is access to the water meter.
Still not sure?
Send a photo on WhatsApp and ask. We will tell you what it likely is and whether it needs a plumber at all.
