Shower sets and rain showers: buying guide

A shower set is the wall mixer, hose, handset and holder or slide rail, and a rain shower set adds an overhead head on a riser pipe. Choose one that matches your wall points and your water heater, because a large rain head needs more hot water and pressure than a basic handset.

What to look for

What comes in a set

A basic shower set has a wall mixer, a flexible hose, a handset and a fixed holder or slide rail. A rain shower set adds a riser pipe and an overhead head, with a diverter on the mixer to switch between the handset and the overhead. A matched set avoids mismatched threads and finishes.

Check your wall points

Exposed wall mixers connect to two points in the wall, hot and cold, through adjustable connectors. Measure the spacing between the points and check the new mixer's connectors can reach before you buy. If the points are crooked or set deep in the tiles, the mixer may not sit flush.

Rain showers and your water heater

A rain head spreads water over a wide area, so it needs good pressure and more hot water. Storage heaters generally handle rain showers best. With an instant heater, choose a model made for rain showers or one with a built-in pump, or the water may run lukewarm.

Height and space

A rain shower riser needs clear height above the head and room for the arm. Check the ceiling height, any false ceiling panel and where the water heater sits. A slide rail lets different users set the handset height, which helps in shared bathrooms.

WELS and licensing

Shower mixers are mixers under WELS, so they must be at least 2-tick to be supplied and installed in Singapore. Replacing a shower mixer or shower head does not need a PUB Licensed Plumber. Moving or adding water pipes in the wall is water service work and does.

Thermostatic mixers

A thermostatic mixer holds the water at a set temperature even when someone opens a tap elsewhere, which helps with young children and older family members. They cost more and work best with steady hot and cold supply.

Checks for HDB, condo and landed homes

HDB

  • Measure the spacing of the two wall points and check the new mixer's connectors can reach.
  • If you use an instant heater, check it is made for rain showers before adding a rain head.
  • Check the ceiling height and heater position leave room for a riser and overhead head.
  • Look for at least 2 WELS ticks on the mixer.

Condo

  • Concealed (in-wall) mixers need a trim from the same brand as the valve body, so note the brand before buying.
  • Glass shower screens limit riser height and handset reach; measure inside the enclosure.
  • Check management's work hours if wall points need adjusting.
  • Look for at least 2 WELS ticks on the mixer.

Landed

  • Check hot water pressure in upper-floor bathrooms before choosing a large rain head.
  • If one storage heater serves several bathrooms, size it for showers running at the same time.
  • Consider a thermostatic mixer where older family members or young children shower on their own.

Installation and repair

Frequently asked questions

Can I have a rain shower with an instant water heater?

Yes, with an instant heater made for rain showers or one with a built-in pump. It heats a limited flow, so the rain head will be gentler than with a storage heater. If several people want rain showers, a storage heater is usually the better fit.

Why is my rain shower weak?

Common reasons are low water pressure, scale blocking the nozzles, an instant heater that cannot keep up, or a partly closed valve. Rub the rubber nozzles to clear scale and check the valves are fully open before replacing anything.

Do I need a licensed plumber to change a shower set?

No. PUB lists replacing mixers and shower heads as work that does not need a licensed plumber. New or relocated water pipes in the wall are different and need a PUB Licensed Plumber.

Can I replace just a broken handset holder?

Yes. Fixed holders screw into the wall and slide-rail holders clamp onto the rail, so match the type and size. A new wall holder can often reuse the old holes; otherwise the old ones are plugged and sealed.

What is a diverter?

It is the knob or lever on a rain shower mixer that switches water between the handset and the overhead head. A stiff or leaking diverter can often be serviced without replacing the whole set.
