Chokes and blockages
Floor trap choke in HDB flats
An HDB kitchen floor trap usually chokes on grease from the sink and lint from the washing machine. The floor trap and branch pipe are the owner's to clear, while the town council clears chokes in the main stack. Send a photo on WhatsApp for a price range before anyone comes, 24/7.

What is different in HDB flats
- Owner or town council: if only your kitchen or service yard trap is slow, the choke is in your trap or branch pipe and it is yours to clear. If dirty water rises when a neighbour above uses water, the main stack is likely blocked. Call the town council.
- Renovation debris is the owner's cost. Under HDB rules, cement, grout or tile pieces that choke a floor trap are cleared at the owner's expense, and set cement takes longer than a grease choke.
- In many HDB kitchens the sink waste pipe runs into the floor trap, so cooking grease cools and sticks inside it. The service yard trap also takes the washing machine outlet, which brings lint and detergent.
- Repeat chokes usually mean the build-up is past the trap, in the branch pipe. Clearing only the trap by hand brings it back within weeks; a drain machine on the branch pipe clears it further.
- Typical estimates: $50–120 to clear a trap by hand, $130–220 with a drain machine on the branch pipe, and $150–350 for renovation debris. After-hours visits cost more.
- Floor traps, gratings and the branch pipe up to the common stack are the owner's to maintain, and HDB asks owners not to tamper with the floor trap itself. Renovation debris chokes are cleared at the owner's cost. If floor traps on the same stack back up, call the town council first.

Full floor trap choke price breakdownGeneral rules for HDB flats
- The town council maintains the common stack, corridor pipes and other common property. Pipes and fittings that serve only your flat are the owner's.
- HDB has renovation rules on hacking, waterproofing and floor traps. Like-for-like repairs are usually fine; hacking work may need HDB approval.
- New flats have a defects liability period. Report defects to HDB first while it applies.
Floor trap choke in HDB homes: common questions
How is EmergencyPlumber different from the town council handyman?
For a simple choke during office hours, your town council's handyman may cost less; West Coast TC, for example, lists a $40 choke rate plus GST for 2024–27. We come 24/7, run a drain machine through the branch pipe when the choke is past the trap, and agree the price before work. If the choke is in the main stack, we tell you to call the town council instead.
Will the town council clear my floor trap choke?
Only if the blockage is in the main stack or common pipe. If it is in your floor trap or branch pipe, it is the owner's to clear. Chokes from renovation debris are always the owner's cost.
How do I stop my HDB kitchen floor trap from choking?
Wipe greasy pans with paper before washing and never pour oil down the sink. Clean the washing machine's lint filter and keep the outlet hose seated in the trap. Pour a pail of hot tap water down the trap once a week to shift fresh grease.
How much does it cost to clear a floor trap choke?
Typical estimates are $50–180 for most chokes. Clearing hair or lint by hand is about $50–120; a drain machine on the branch pipe is about $130–220; renovation debris about $150–350. Send a photo on WhatsApp for a range before anyone comes.
Can I replace the floor trap myself?
You can replace the grating, which is simple work. Do not chip or remove the floor trap itself: HDB tells owners not to tamper with floor traps, and damage can cause leaks into the flat below. Replacing the trap body means hacking and sanitary pipe work, which is a job for a PUB Licensed Plumber.
Why does my floor trap smell after it is cleared?
Grease left on the pipe wall can still smell for a few days, so flush the trap with hot water. If the trap is rarely used, its water seal dries out and lets sewer gas through; pour a cup of water in every week or two. If the smell stays and neighbours notice it too, tell the town council.
