Installation, replacement and repair

Foldable shower seat installation

A foldable shower seat is fixed to the shower wall and flips down so someone can sit while bathing, then folds flat when not in use. It must be anchored into solid wall with fixings that match its weight rating, and eligible HDB households may get one subsidised under EASE.

When to replace or repair

  • Standing through a whole shower is tiring or unsteady for someone at home.
  • A plastic stool is being used in the shower and slides on wet tiles.
  • The bathroom is too small to leave a free-standing shower chair in place.
  • A caregiver or helper needs the person seated to help them bathe safely.
  • An existing fold-down seat sags, wobbles, or its hinge is stiff or rusted.

Common reasons

  • Reduced balance or leg strength with age.
  • Recovery after a fall, operation or stroke, often on a therapist's advice.
  • Free-standing chairs take up floor space and can tip on the slope towards the floor trap.
  • Plastic stools that crack or slide, which are not made for wet floors.
  • Old seats fixed with light plugs that have loosened over time.

Before you call

Safe things to try first

  • Measure the wall space in the shower area and check that the door still opens fully with the seat folded down.
  • Sit the user on a dining chair and measure from the floor to the back of the knee. The seat should let their feet rest flat on the floor.
  • Note where the mixer and shower handset are. The user should be able to reach both while seated.
  • If you live in an HDB flat, check with HDB whether your household qualifies for EASE before buying a seat.

Stop and call if

  • The wall behind the shower area sounds hollow when knocked.
  • An existing seat moves or creaks when someone sits on it.
  • Tiles around the old fixings are cracked or loose.

What we do

  1. 1Check the seat model, its maximum user weight and its fixing kit, and confirm the wall is solid enough to carry that load.
  2. 2Mark the position with you: seat height, reach to the mixer and handset, and door clearance when the seat is down.
  3. 3Scan for concealed pipes near the mixer, drill through the tile with a tile bit, and fit heavy-duty anchors.
  4. 4Mount the seat, seal every fixing with silicone, and adjust any drop-down legs so they sit level on the sloping floor.
  5. 5Load-test the seat, check it folds and locks smoothly, and show the user and caregiver how to use it.

HDB, condo and landed

HDB

EASE covers foldable shower seats for eligible households, so check with HDB first. If you go private, keep drilling within HDB's renovation hours. HDB bathrooms are compact, so make sure the seat does not block the door or the floor trap when folded down.

Condo

Inform management before drilling and keep to the by-law hours. Many condo bathrooms have a glass shower screen and a narrow shower area, so measure the depth needed with the seat down before you buy.

Landed

You have more freedom on position. Think about the whole route: a grab bar at the shower entry and a non-slip mat outside the shower help as much as the seat.

Foldable shower seat installation: common questions

Is a wall-mounted seat better than a free-standing shower chair?

In small bathrooms, usually yes. It folds out of the way, does not slide or tip on the sloping floor, and has no legs to trip over. A free-standing chair is fine for short-term use or where the wall cannot take fixings.

How much weight can a foldable shower seat hold?

It depends on the model, so check the maximum user weight on the box. The rating only holds if the seat is fixed into solid wall with the right anchors, which is why the wall is checked first.

Will drilling into the shower wall damage the waterproofing?

The holes go through the tile and any wall waterproofing, so each one is sealed with silicone to stop water getting behind. Fixings placed away from where the shower spray hits hardest also stay drier.

Can I get a shower seat under HDB EASE?

Foldable shower seats are among the items EASE offers to eligible households. Check eligibility, the current subsidised rate and how to apply with HDB.

What height should the seat be?

High enough that the user's feet rest flat on the floor with knees at about a right angle. Measuring from the floor to the back of their knee while they sit on a normal chair gives a good starting point.
