Installation, replacement and repair
Grab bar installation
A grab bar is a fixed rail screwed into solid wall beside the toilet, in the shower or at the bathroom door, so someone can steady themselves on wet tiles. Most bars take under an hour to fit, and eligible HDB households can get them heavily subsidised under HDB's EASE scheme.

When to replace or repair
- An elderly family member grabs the towel rail, basin edge or soap holder to get up from the toilet.
- Someone at home has slipped, or nearly slipped, on wet bathroom tiles.
- A family member is coming home after a fall, stroke or hip or knee operation, and the hospital therapist has suggested grab bars.
- Stepping in or out at the bathroom doorway, where many flats have a small step, feels unsteady.
- An existing grab bar wobbles, turns in its brackets, or has rust around the screws.
Common reasons
- Parents ageing in place, or moving in with family, as balance and leg strength drop.
- Recovery after an operation, fall or long hospital stay, often on an occupational therapist's advice.
- Wet tiled floors and a shower area that slopes to the floor trap, which make slips more likely.
- Old bars fixed with plastic plugs into the tile only, which loosen over time.
- Cheap chrome-plated bars that rust in a humid bathroom.
- A toilet with no wall beside it, which needs a fold-up bar fixed to the wall behind instead.
Before you call
Safe things to try first
- Do not use a suction-cup grab bar, towel rail or soap holder to take body weight. They are not built for it and can pull off without warning.
- Ask the person who will use the bars to sit down and stand up at the toilet and step into the shower, and mark with tape where their hand naturally reaches.
- If you live in an HDB flat, check with HDB whether your household qualifies for EASE before booking a private installer.
- If an existing bar wobbles, stop using it until it is refixed.
Stop and call if
- The bar pulls away from the wall or the tile around a fixing cracks.
- The wall sounds hollow when you knock on it, which suggests a board partition that needs special anchors.
- You do not know whether water pipes or wiring run behind the spot you want to drill.
What we do
- 1Ask who will use the bars and for what, such as getting up from the toilet or stepping into the shower, and agree positions and heights with the user present where possible.
- 2Check the wall type with a pilot hole and scan for concealed pipes and wiring, which often run straight above and below taps and mixers.
- 3Drill through the tile with a tile bit at low speed so it does not crack, then into the wall, and fit anchors that suit concrete, brick or board.
- 4Mount the bar and seal each screw hole with silicone so shower water does not get behind the tiles.
- 5Pull hard on the bar in every direction to test it, then show the user and any caregiver how to use it.

HDB, condo and landed
HDB
Grab bars are allowed and common in HDB flats. Drilling is noisy work, so keep to HDB's renovation hours. In older flats, water pipes may be concealed in the bathroom walls, so each spot is checked before drilling. Eligible households can apply to HDB for subsidised grab bars under EASE.
Condo
Let management or security know a contractor is coming, and keep to the by-law hours for drilling. Some condo bathrooms have board partitions rather than concrete, so a pilot hole is drilled first before choosing anchors.
Landed
You decide everything, so think beyond the bathroom: bars by the staircase, outdoor steps and the porch can help as much as the toilet bar. Use outdoor-grade stainless steel anywhere rain reaches.
Grab bar installation: common questions
Where should grab bars go in an HDB bathroom?
The most useful spots are beside the toilet on the wall side, inside the shower area near the mixer, and at the bathroom doorway where many flats have a small step. A vertical bar helps with standing up, a horizontal bar helps with moving along, and an L-shaped bar does both.
Stainless steel or nylon-coated grab bar: which is better?
Stainless steel is hard-wearing and easy to clean; choose solid stainless steel rather than chrome-plated so it does not rust. Nylon-coated bars feel warmer, grip better with wet hands and come in colours that are easier to see for people with poor eyesight.
Can grab bars be fixed to tiles without cracking them?
Yes. The tile is drilled slowly with a tile bit and the anchors go into the wall behind, not just the tile. Old tiles that already sound hollow can crack, so it helps to have a spare tile.
What is HDB EASE and does it cover grab bars?
EASE (Enhancement for Active Seniors) is an HDB programme that offers grab bars, slip-resistant treatment and other fittings at heavily subsidised rates to eligible households, such as those with an elderly member. Check eligibility and current rates with HDB directly.
Can a grab bar be fixed to a board or drywall partition?
Only with the right fixings. Standard plastic plugs will pull out of board. A plumber will use heavy-duty cavity anchors or fix through to a stud or backing plate, and if the wall cannot take the load, suggest a different position.
