A shower set is the handset, hose and slide rail, and a rain shower adds a large overhead head on a riser pipe. Fitting one to the existing water point usually takes about an hour, but a rain shower on an instant heater generally needs a heater model with a built-in pump.

When to replace or repair
- The handset hose leaks at the ends, has split, or the outer coil has stretched.
- The spray is weak or uneven because the nozzles are clogged with scale.
- The slide rail is loose or rusted, or the holder no longer grips the handset at any height.
- Water leaks from the joint between the wall outlet or heater and the shower hose.
- You want a rain shower, or a set that suits a taller or elderly user.
- You are changing the water heater and want a set that matches it.
Common reasons
- Scale build-up in the handset nozzles and inside the hose.
- Hoses that kink and twist because the handset is hung at an awkward angle.
- Wall plugs that have loosened in the tiles, letting the rail wobble.
- Plastic parts that turn brittle after years of hot water and cleaning products.
- Worn washers at the hose ends or at the wall outlet.
Before you call
Safe things to try first
- Soak the handset in white vinegar for an hour and rub the nozzles to clear scale. This often restores the spray.
- Check the washers at both ends of the hose and hand-tighten the connections.
- Decide the height you want for the overhead shower and the top of the rail, and mark where the existing holes are.
- If you have an instant heater, note its brand and model so the new set can be matched to it.
Stop and call if
- Water is running behind the tiles or out of the wall around the outlet.
- The rail or riser pipe has pulled away from the wall and the tile around the screws is cracked.
- The heater's power point or cables run close to where the new holes would go.

- 4Mount the rail or rain shower riser level, connect the hose and outlets with new washers, and seal around the brackets.
- 5Run the water, check flow and temperature, test the diverter if there is one, and check every joint for leaks.

HDB, condo and landed
HDB
Shower sets and fittings inside your flat are yours to maintain. Drilling counts as noisy work under HDB renovation rules, which limit the hours it can be done, so book the visit within those hours.
Condo
Check the by-laws on work hours and inform security before the visit. If your unit has a concealed mixer with a rain shower, the job may involve the mixer as well.
Landed
You own all the pipes, so a shower point on a different wall is possible, but that is piping work for a PUB Licensed Plumber. Check the water pressure in upper-floor bathrooms before buying a rain shower.

Can I install a rain shower with my instant water heater?
Only if the heater gives enough flow. Most rain shower sets need an instant heater model with a built-in pump to boost pressure. Without one, the rain head may give only a weak spray.
How high should the shower rail be?
There is no fixed rule. Set the rail so the tallest regular user can stand under the handset at its top position, and the lowest position is reachable for children or someone seated. For a rain shower, leave clear headroom under the overhead head.
Will drilling crack my tiles?
There is a small risk with any tile. A proper tile bit, no hammer action and keeping away from tile edges keep it low. Reusing the existing holes where possible avoids it entirely.
Do I need a licensed plumber to install a shower set?
No. Replacing shower heads, mixers and flexible hoses is on PUB's list of work that does not need a Licensed Plumber. Moving the water point in the wall is piping work and does.
What should I check before buying a shower set?
Check that it connects to your mixer or heater outlet, whether it is a handset only or a rain shower with a diverter, and that the rail length suits the space on your wall. Send the model and a photo of the wall before buying.
