Usually simpler when the heater is wall-mounted and easy to reach. Older units may need a part that is no longer stocked, which can tip the decision towards replacement.

Heaters above a false ceiling take longer to reach and drain, which adds labour.
Landed
Larger tanks and long pipe runs take longer to drain and refill. Several heaters of the same age may fail around the same time, so ask about doing them together.

How do I avoid being overcharged for a heater repair?
Agree the price before work starts, in writing or on WhatsApp. There have been reported cases in Singapore of homeowners billed far more than expected for heater repairs. Ask which part is being changed and keep the old part.
When is replacing cheaper than repairing?
If the tank leaks, more than one major part has failed, or the repair quote is close to the price of a new unit, replacement usually makes more sense. A new storage heater with labour often comes to roughly $300–700.
Do I still pay if the fault turns out to be electrical?
An inspection fee may still apply. If the problem is in the wiring or DB rather than the heater, a Licensed Electrical Worker is needed, and that is quoted separately.
