The valve body sits inside the wall, so tiles have to be hacked to reach it and then patched or replaced. If only the cartridge is worn, it can often be changed from the front without hacking, so ask for that to be checked first.
Is it worth buying the mixer myself?
It can be, as long as you measure the inlet spacing first and the mixer carries a WELS label of 2 ticks or more. Send the model before you buy so the fit can be checked against your wall.
