Toilet bowl choke
A choked toilet bowl fills up instead of flushing away, or drains very slowly. Most are cleared in under an hour with a plunger or toilet auger, without removing the bowl.

What it looks like
- Water rises to the rim when you flush, then drains away slowly over several minutes.
- The bowl will not flush at all and the water level stays high.
- Gurgling from the bowl or the nearby floor trap when you run the basin or shower.
- Water seeps out at the base of the bowl after flushing.
- A bad smell that stays after cleaning.
Common causes
- Wet wipes, including ones labelled flushable. They do not break down like toilet paper.
- Sanitary pads, cotton buds, dental floss and paper towels.
- Too much toilet paper in one flush, especially with a low-flow cistern.
- Small objects dropped in by children, such as toys, bottle caps or toothbrushes.
- Hardened urine scale narrowing the trapway in older bowls.
- A blockage further down the branch pipe or common stack, which also affects the floor trap.
Before you call
Safe things to try first
- Stop flushing. Each flush adds more water and can make the bowl overflow.
- Use a flange plunger (the kind with a soft extension at the bottom). Seal it over the outlet and push and pull firmly 10 to 15 times.
- Pour a pail of warm (not boiling) water from waist height to add pressure, then wait 10 minutes.
- Skip chemical drain cleaners. They rarely clear a solid blockage and are dangerous if the bowl later needs to be opened.
Stop and call if
- You know a hard object such as a toy or phone went down.
- The floor trap also backs up when you flush.
- Water is leaking from the base of the bowl.
- Neighbours on the same stack have the same problem. In HDB blocks, call your town council first.
What we do
- 1Ask what was flushed and check whether the floor trap and basin drain normally, to find where the blockage is.
- 2Clear the trapway with a heavy-duty plunger or a toilet auger, which reaches through the bend without scratching the glaze.
- 3If the auger cannot clear it, use a motorised drain machine on the branch pipe. If a hard object is stuck in the bowl, the bowl may need to be lifted and refitted, which is work for a PUB Licensed Plumber.
- 4Flush several times with a full cistern and run the floor trap to confirm everything drains at full speed.
- 5Show you what came out and explain how to stop it happening again.

HDB, condo and landed
HDB
The bowl and the branch pipe up to the common stack are the owner's responsibility. If the floor trap backs up too, or flats on the same stack are affected, contact your town council first because the stack is common property.
Condo
The pipes inside your unit are yours to maintain. Blockages in the vertical stack are handled by the managing agent (MCST). Let security know a plumber is coming.
Landed
If several fittings drain slowly, check the inspection chamber outside. Roots and fat build-up in the underground line are common causes in older houses.
Toilet bowl choke: common questions
Can I use Coca-Cola or baking soda to clear a toilet choke?
They will not shift a real blockage such as wipes or an object. Hot water and a proper flange plunger work better. If that fails after two or three tries, stop before the bowl overflows.
Are flushable wet wipes safe for Singapore toilets?
No. Many wipes marked flushable do not break down quickly and are one of the most common causes of toilet chokes. Bin them instead.
My toilet and floor trap are both choked. What does that mean?
The blockage is probably past the bowl, in the branch pipe or common stack. In an HDB flat, call your town council first. If they confirm it is within your flat, a plumber will need a drain machine.
Do I need a licensed plumber to clear a toilet choke?
No. PUB lists clearing blockages in toilets and floor traps as work that does not need a licensed plumber. Removing and replacing the toilet bowl itself does.
How do I stop my toilet choking again?
Only flush toilet paper. Put a covered bin next to the toilet for wipes and sanitary products. If it chokes every few weeks, the trapway may be scaled or the pipe may sag and should be checked.
