Chokes and blockages

Drain pipe choke

A drain pipe choke is a blockage in the branch pipe that carries waste water from your fittings to the stack or inspection chamber, so several fittings drain slowly at once. It is cleared with a motorised drain machine or high-pressure water jetting, not a plunger.

What it looks like

  • Two or more fittings, such as the toilet and floor trap, drain slowly at the same time.
  • Water comes up through the floor trap when you flush or the washing machine drains.
  • Gurgling in one fitting when another is used.
  • A sewage smell in the bathroom or kitchen that cleaning does not fix.
  • Chokes that come back a few weeks after being cleared.
  • In landed homes, an inspection chamber outside that is full of standing water.

Common causes

  • Kitchen grease hardening along the pipe wall and catching other debris.
  • Wet wipes, sanitary products and hair building up at bends and joints.
  • Scale and corrosion inside older cast-iron or galvanised pipes narrowing the bore.
  • Renovation debris such as cement, grout or sand washed into the pipe.
  • Pipes that sag or have too little fall, so solids settle.
  • Tree roots getting into cracked underground pipes or inspection chambers at landed homes.

Before you call

Safe things to try first

  • Stop using the affected fittings, especially the toilet and washing machine, so nothing overflows.
  • Ask neighbours on the same stack whether they have the same problem. If they do, it is likely the common stack.
  • In a landed home, check the nearest inspection chamber. Standing water means the choke is further down; an empty chamber means it is between the house and the chamber.

Stop and call if

  • Sewage is coming up through a floor trap or the toilet.
  • Several flats on the same stack are affected. In HDB blocks, call the town council.
  • Chemical cleaners have already been used. Tell the plumber before the pipe is opened.
  • Water is leaking from a pipe joint or into the flat below.

What we do

  1. 1Test each fitting to locate the blockage between the fittings, the branch pipe and the stack or inspection chamber.
  2. 2Open the nearest access point, such as a floor trap, cleaning eye or inspection chamber.
  3. 3Run a motorised drain machine with a cutting head through the pipe to break up and pull out the blockage.
  4. 4For grease, scale or long runs, use high-pressure water jetting to scour the pipe back to full bore.
  5. 5Test all connected fittings together, and suggest a camera inspection if the pipe looks damaged or the choke keeps coming back.

How much it costs

Most drain pipe choke jobs in Singapore cost $150–$500 (per job, standard hours). This is an estimate; the final price is confirmed on WhatsApp or on site before work starts.

  • Drain machine on the branch pipe$150–$250
  • High-pressure water jetting$250–$500
  • Jetting added to a machine job$100–$300
  • CCTV camera inspection$180–$300

HDB, condo and landed

HDB

Owners maintain the branch pipes inside the flat up to where they join the common stack; the town council maintains the stack. If water backs up from the stack or neighbours are affected, call the town council first.

Condo

The MCST maintains the stacks and common drains. Let management know before work, as some condos limit drain machine and jetting work to set hours.

Landed

The owner is responsible for all drainage pipes and inspection chambers on the property, including underground lines. Know where your inspection chambers are, and keep their covers clear of planters and tiles.

Drain pipe choke: common questions

How do I know the choke is in the drain pipe and not the toilet?

If only one fitting is slow, the problem is usually in that fitting. If two or more fittings on the same line are slow, or water comes up through the floor trap when you flush, the blockage is in the shared drain pipe.

What is the difference between a drain machine and jetting?

A drain machine pushes a rotating steel cable with a cutting head through the pipe to break up a blockage. Jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the full pipe wall, which works better on grease and scale.

Can jetting damage old pipes?

It can if the pressure is wrong for an old or cracked pipe. The plumber should check the pipe's condition first, adjust the pressure, and may suggest a camera inspection before jetting.

Is the common stack in my HDB block my responsibility?

No. The town council maintains the common stack. The branch pipes in your flat, up to where they join the stack, are yours.

Why does my drain choke every few months?

Usually because the pipe was only punched through, or it is scaled, sagging or damaged. Clearing it to full bore with jetting and checking it with a camera helps find the real cause.
