  • What it is made of. Hair and soap clear quickly; set cement or grout takes much longer.
  • Kitchen and service yard traps with heavy grease or lint build-up more often need a machine.
  • How many floor traps and fittings are affected.
  • Time of day. Late-night and public-holiday visits cost more.

HDB vs condo vs landed

HDB

Usually at the lower end for hair and soap chokes. Chokes caused by renovation debris are the owner's cost under HDB rules and take longer, because set cement is slow to clear.

Condo

Similar to HDB. Some condos need you to inform management before a drain machine is used, and noisy work must fit the hours in the MCST by-laws.

Landed

Can cost more when several floor traps share a long run to the inspection chamber outside, or when the blockage is in the underground pipe.

Floor trap choke price: common questions

Who pays if the floor trap choked after my renovation?

In HDB flats, chokes caused by renovation debris are cleared at the owner's expense. If your contractor's works caused it, ask them to cover it, but you will usually be the one engaging and paying the plumber. Keep photos of what came out of the pipe.

Why can a kitchen floor trap cost more to clear than a bathroom one?

Kitchen and service yard traps collect grease and washing machine lint, which builds up further along the pipe and more often needs a drain machine. Hair clogs in bathroom traps can usually be reached by hand, which is the cheaper job.

Is there a charge if the choke turns out to be in the common stack?

A transport or inspection fee may still apply and should be told to you before the visit. In HDB blocks you will be told to contact the town council, which clears stack chokes.
