Installation, replacement and repair
Toilet acrylic ceiling panel with lighting
An acrylic ceiling panel is a light, water-resistant sheet fitted just below an existing toilet ceiling, usually with LED lighting built in, and is a common HDB upgrade to cover stains or peeling paint. If a stain comes from a leak in the flat above, fix that leak before covering the ceiling.

When to replace or repair
- Ceiling paint is peeling or bubbling from steam.
- Old brown or yellow water stains remain after a leak upstairs was repaired.
- The old ceiling light is rusty, flickering or too dim.
- Pipes or patchy repairs are visible on the toilet ceiling.
- Black mould spots come back on the ceiling soon after cleaning.
Common reasons
- Steam from hot showers in a toilet with weak ventilation.
- Old leak stains left behind after the source upstairs was fixed.
- Ageing plaster and paint in older flats.
- Wanting brighter, even lighting without redoing the whole bathroom.
- Hiding pipes and old patch repairs for a neater look.
Before you call
Safe things to try first
- Mark the edge of any stain with a pencil and check it over a few days, especially after the upstairs neighbours shower. If it grows, there is an active leak.
- Touch the stain. If it feels damp or cold, do not cover it yet.
- Note where the current light point and its switch are.
- Measure the toilet's length and width, and photograph the ceiling, including any water heater or pipes.
Stop and call if
- The stain is damp, growing or dripping. Get the leak traced and fixed first.
- Concrete is flaking off and rusty steel bars show through. Have it repaired before anything covers it.
- The light flickers or buzzes, or the switch sparks. That is an electrical fault for a Licensed Electrical Worker.
What we do
- 1Check the ceiling for active leaks, flaking concrete and pipe positions, and note where the light point, water heater and any exhaust fan sit.
- 2Fix a lightweight aluminium frame around the walls just below the existing ceiling, leaving room for pipes and lights.
- 3Mount the LED lighting and connect it to the existing light point. Any new wiring or switch is done by a Licensed Electrical Worker.
- 4Fit cut-to-size acrylic panels into the frame, keeping a removable section for access to the pipes above.
- 5Test the lights, check the panels sit flat and clear of the water heater, and clean up.

HDB, condo and landed
HDB
The floor slab between you and the flat above is a shared responsibility. If a stain is still active, sort out the leak with your upstairs neighbour and HDB before covering it, especially if your flat is still within HDB's ceiling-leak warranty. Keep a removable section so the ceiling can be inspected later.
Condo
Many condo bathrooms already have a false ceiling with an access hatch to the water heater or valves, and any new ceiling must keep that access. Leaks from the unit above are settled between the owners or through the MCST.
Landed
Above a top-floor bathroom there may be a roof rather than another floor, so check for roof leaks after heavy rain before covering stains. You own the whole structure, so all repairs are your call.
Toilet acrylic ceiling panel with lighting: common questions
Will an acrylic panel stop a ceiling leak?
No. It only hides the ceiling. Water from an active leak collects on top of the panel, drips through the edges and keeps damaging the slab. Fix the leak first, then cover the stain.
Can I still reach the pipes above the panel?
You should be able to. Ask for a removable section or a panel that lifts out, so pipes and the slab can be inspected without breaking the ceiling.
Does the lighting need a licensed electrician?
Connecting to an existing light point is routine. Adding a new light point, switch or wiring is work for a Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) and is quoted separately.
Will mould grow behind the panel?
It can if the toilet stays damp. Good ventilation, such as an exhaust fan or leaving the window open after showers, matters more than the panel itself.
What happens to the water heater near my toilet ceiling?
The panel is cut and framed around it, leaving room to service or replace the heater later. Mention it when you ask for a quote so it is planned for.
